Anodized Titanium

Anodizing applies an electrical current to titanium, forming a luminous oxide layer — a process typically reserved for aerospace and biomedical manufacturing. Matthew Martin explores the expressive potential of this chemical process by removing it from its industrial context and combining it with traditional engraving.

Through this intersection of chemistry, technology, and ornament, Matthew creates vivid floral imagery on plates of titanium. These pieces bring delicate organic forms into dialogue with a material engineered for extreme technical performance.

About the artist-

Matthew Martin is a pioneer of the anodized titanium medium. He was initially exposed to the process through his custom pen business. Over the years, he began to realize the potential of this chemical reaction. After years of trial and error, Matthew discovered a way to use anodizing in combination with traditional engraving. His works have been displayed in exhibits throughout the upstate of South Carolina.
